Comments: "Doomed By Dope" is a fairly well-known title in this field, thanks in no small part to the front cover and Bobby Mankin's powerful presence thereupon. Kids just can't afford hairdos like that anymore! It's a presentation from our old friends at Rainbow Sound (see Freddie Gage entry), who found Bobby and his friend Joe Lee via the Teen Liberators, where young junkies and convicts in turn find Jesus.
Except for some mandatory gospel music, this album contains Mankin's testimony on how he went astray with marijuana and heroin, and got involved in some serious Mexican drug trafficking via Laredo. The guy has been on a real roller coaster ride for sure, and has some powerful stories to tell. The thick Houston accent and Mankin's unaffected, straightforward presentation provides an appealing realness. Not bad as a total package, although the specific drug talk is limited, and contains no references to psychedelics. A steel-cage match between Mankin and Brian Ruud would be something to watch!
